Spine Treatments

Dr. Mathew Cyriac is an orthopaedic spine surgeon and Associate Professor at Tulane University School of Medicine, specializing in both non-operative and advanced surgical management of conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He holds dual degrees—an M.D. from Albany Medical College and an M.B.A. in Healthcare Management—complemented by a residency in orthopaedic surgery at George Washington University Hospital and a fellowship in spine surgery at Emory University.

Dr. Cyriac takes a modern and patient-centered approach to spine care, integrating minimally invasive and motion-preserving techniques alongside traditional interventions. Among these, he is skilled in extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF), a procedure performed through a small incision on the side of the body, designed to address spinal disorders while reducing pain, tissue disruption, and recovery time . He also offers alternatives to conventional spinal fusion—such as cervical disc replacement and laminoplasty—aimed at preserving spinal motion and minimizing postoperative stiffness.

His expertise extends to complex spinal deformities, including adult scoliosis, as well as challenging scenarios such as failed back surgery syndrome. Patients endure less extensive incisions, have diminished postoperative discomfort, and experience reduced hospital stays and accelerated recovery—advantages well aligned with the foundational goals of minimally invasive spine surgery.

Dr. Cyriac practices at a range of reputable facilities, including Sports Medicine Plus (Tulane Doctors), Tulane Lakeside Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital, and the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System.
