Dr. Mathew Cyriac

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeon

Mathew Cyriac, M.D., M.B.A. is an orthopaedic spine surgeon specializing in the comprehensive care of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He combines advanced surgical expertise with a patient-centered approach, offering both non-operative and operative solutions for spinal disorders ranging from degenerative disease to complex deformities such as adult scoliosis.

Dr. Cyriac is particularly known for his use of minimally invasive and motion-preserving techniques. Procedures such as cervical disc replacement, laminoplasty, and prone lateral interbody fusion allow him to restore spinal function while minimizing recovery time. He also cares for patients with some of the most challenging spine problems, including revision surgery and failed back surgery.

Clinical Practice

Dr. Cyriac serves as Chief of Orthopaedics and OrthoSpine at East Jefferson General Hospital and as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at Tulane University School of Medicine. He also cares for veterans as Co-Director of Spine Surgery at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System.

Leadership & Teaching

At Tulane, Dr. Cyriac plays a key role in resident and medical student education, holding joint appointments in Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery. He lectures nationally and internationally on spine surgery innovations, including prone lateral techniques, motion-preserving cervical procedures, and minimally invasive deformity correction.

Research & Publications

Dr. Cyriac has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on topics including cervical disc arthroplasty, anterior and lateral lumbar fusion, spine biomechanics, and opioid reduction following spine surgery. His research has been published in journals such as Spine, Clinical Spine Surgery, North American Spine Society Journal, and the Journal of Spine Surgery.

He also contributes to spine surgery education through book chapters in Emory’s Illustrated Tips and Tricks in Spine Surgery and other surgical texts.
