Minimally Invasive Discectomy Recovery

A minimally invasive discectomy is an outpatient procedure. A full recovery from a minimally invasive discectomy generally takes about six weeks, though individual healing times can vary based on factors such as overall health, the severity of the condition, and adherence to post-operative guidelines.

Adhering to these guidelines helps ensure a smooth recovery, reduced complications, and the best possible surgical outcome.

  • Avoid bending, twisting, and heavy lifting (typically more than 10-15 lbs) to prevent strain on the spine.
  • Engage in gentle walking to promote circulation and reduce stiffness.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting or standing—change positions frequently to prevent discomfort.
  • Gradually increase activity levels as tolerated but avoid high-impact exercises until cleared by your surgeon.

  • Keep the incision clean and dry; avoid soaking in baths, hot tubs, or pools until advised.
  • Follow the surgeon’s instructions regarding dressing changes and wound care.
  • Watch for signs of infection, including redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, or fever, and report any concerns.

  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications as directed.
  • Use ice packs intermittently to reduce swelling and discomfort.

  • Practice good posture when sitting, standing, and walking to minimize strain on the spine.
  • Sleep in a comfortable position, such as on the back with a pillow under the knees or on the side with a pillow between the legs.
  • Avoid prolonged bed rest—staying mobile aids in recovery.

  • Avoid driving while taking narcotic pain medication.
  • Most patients can resume driving within a week or two, depending on pain levels and mobility.
  • Return to work depends on job type—sedentary jobs may allow an earlier return, while physically demanding jobs require longer recovery.

  • Some patients may be referred to physical therapy to restore flexibility, strength, and proper movement mechanics.
  • Follow recommended stretching and strengthening exercises as directed by your healthcare provider.

Most individuals can resume normal daily activities relatively quickly, depending on the nature of their job and personal healing process.

  • Attend all scheduled follow-up visits to monitor healing and progress.
  • Report any worsening pain, new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or persistent numbness immediately.
